2016 Lis – score 92
Flavors of golden apple, pear and white peach combine with notes of toasted nuts and cream in this rich oak-aged blend of pinot grigio, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. It has the potential to gain further complexity with a year or two of cellaring.
2017 Gris – score 91
From a gravelly vineyard planted 30 years ago, Gris is fermented and aged for 11 months in used French oak tonneaux with frequent lees stirring. It’s plush and broad, with flavors of lemon curd, toasted almond and peaches, zesty acidity bringing it to a mouthwatering finish.
2016 La Vila – score 90
This is intensely herbal, with scents of basil, rosemary and mint accenting brisk flavors of golden apple and grapefruit. It finishes with a note of white pepper.
2017 Pinot Grigio – score 90
From the winery’s younger vines and aged entirely in stainless-steel tanks, this is robust and fleshy, the emphasis on flavors of juicy peach and apricot.
Gris Pinot Grigio 2016 – score 91
Barrel fermented and aged, this is a flamboyant pinot grigio, bursting with flavors of juicy peach, tangerine and kiwi in a creamy almond-butter texture. Wildflower scents add a delicate touch while notes of almond skin balance the ripe fruit.
Lis 2015 – score 91
This leads with sauvignon blanc flavors of grapefruit, lime and spearmint, then grows richer with air, developing notes of green apple, toasted nuts and a touch of white pepper. The weight and texture are appealing, the acidity bright and nicely woven; it just needs a few more months for the flavors to meld.
Gris Pinot Grigio 2015 – score 91
Inviting scents of candied lemon and star fruit lead into this wine’s broad flavors of golden apple and spiced pear. It feels rich and viscous, lifted by notes of lemon zest and mint.
Gris Pinot Grigio 2013 – score 92
Made with fruit from the Gris vineyard fermented in stainless steel and then aged on the fine lees in 500-liter oak casks, this developed impressive concentration and power. The 2013 offers savory notes of nuts and lemongrass that balance the white peach and melon flavors. It tastes almost meaty, the flavors supported by a stony minerality and cooled by bright acidity.
Jurosa Chardonnay 2013 – score 91
This chardonnay tastes almost volcanic in its crushed gravel and smoke notes. A saline minerality weaves through the wine’s core, picking up subtle flavors of golden apple and pear along with scents of mint and dried flowers. Frequent lees stirring over eleven months in 500-liter barrels smoothed out some of the wine’s stony austerity, giving it enough richness to pair with braised rabbit.
Picol Sauvignon 2013 – score 90
After a year of resting on the fine lees, with frequent stirring, this is creamy and rich, the wine’s juicy acidity and herbal notes keeping the citrus and white peach flavors bright. Decant it to blow off some of the reductive notes and pour it with lobster bisque.
